Bengaluru FC crowned champion on I-League debut

Bengaluru FC claim the I-League title with one match in hand beating Dempo SC in their maiden campaign.
Bengaluru FC started troubling Dempo defense right from kick-off. And it took 2 minutes for league leaders to go 1 up as Australian Sean Rooney found the Dempo goalie off line from Robin Singh’s misplaced shot and slotted in the opener. Bengaluru continued their attack but failed to find the second and the score remained 1-0 till half time.

11 minutes into the second half, India international Robin Singh amends his 1st half mistake as he chested down a long ball to slam it into the far post to make it 2-0. Dempo defense failed to track Menyongar run as he latched onto Chhetri’s pass and placed it at the far post in the 78th minute. Dempo scored two consolation goals in a space of 7 minutes from Beto and Romeo Fernandes. Bengaluru skipper Sunil Chhetri put the final nail in the coffin to make the score line 4-2 and took his season tally to 13 goals. The score-line remained the same until the end as Bengaluru completed the double over Dempo SC.

With this win Bengaluru FC secured 44 points from 23 matches and ended title hopes of East Bengal and Salgaocar who are on 40 and 39 points respectively.
